AR 670-1: 13-1. Authorization for wear

The ASU–M is authorized for year-round wear by pregnant Soldiers as a dress uniform, when prescribed for wear by CTA 50–900, AR 700–84, and the commander. The ASU–M is a supplemental issue item for enlisted Soldiers; it is a personally procured item for officers.

The AGSU-M (maternity) consists of a tunic, slacks, skirt, shirt, necktie, undergarments, headgear, footwear, and socks or hosiery. Variations are Class A (all components), Class B (no tunic; necktie optional with short-sleeve shirt), and Dress (four-in-hand necktie after retreat; no combat boots or organizational items).

Pregnant Soldiers may wear the AGSU-M on duty, off duty, and during travel, including for formal and informal social functions after retreat. Army Directive 2025-02: Parenthood, Pregnancy, and Postpartum

Army Directive 2025-02 extends the postpartum body composition exemption from 180 to 365 days. Soldiers are exempt from record fitness tests for 365 days and from unit PT for 180 days after pregnancy. Commanders cannot require ASU/AGSU wear during pregnancy or for 365 days postpartum. Birthparents receive a 365-day deployment and training deferment.

The maternity shirt is a 65/35-percent polyester and cotton blend in Army white 521. It has an eight-button front, straight-cut bottom, and turndown-style collars with shoulder loops.

The ASU-M tunic and skirt are 100-percent texturized polyester in Army blue 150 or 450. General officers wear matching dark blue slacks; all others wear light blue (shade 151 or 451). Shirts are 65/35 polyester-cotton in Army white 521. The optional service hat matches the coat material.

The maternity shirt is worn outside the skirt and slacks, with or without the tunic. The all-weather coat may be worn unbuttoned if necessary. Only beret-authorized Soldiers, MPs on duty, and air assault-coded personnel may blouse slacks with black combat boots. The skirt is worn no shorter than 1 inch above or 2 inches below the back of the knee.

The maternity tunic is hip-length with a V-neck design, side pockets, and pleats below the bustline. Officers authorized for aiguillette or fourragere attach a ligne button on the appropriate shoulder seam. Enlisted personnel wear shoulder loops piped with gold-colored braid, 2-1/2 inches wide at the shoulder edge.

The maternity slacks are straight-legged with an elastic waistband and nylon-knit, stretch-front panel. Gold braid ornamentation runs on each outside seam: general officers wear two 1/2-inch braids spaced 1/2 inch apart; other officers and corporals and above wear one 1-inch braid; specialists and below wear no ornamentation.

The AGSU-Maternity shirt is 75-percent cotton and 25-percent polyester in heritage tan 566 with an eight-button front and turndown-style collars. Short-sleeved may be worn with or without necktie; long-sleeved requires a heritage green four-in-hand necktie.

The maternity work uniform is designed to fit loosely; alterations for a tight fit are not authorized. The coat is worn outside the trousers with no belt. Sleeves may be rolled above the elbow when authorized. Silk weight cold-weather undershirts are not authorized as outer undershirts. Footgear other than combat boots may be prescribed as needed. Do not starch under any circumstances.
