AR 670-1: 11-1. Authorization for wear

The male ASU with dress variation is authorized for year-round wear by all male personnel. When prescribed by CTA 50–900, the male ASU is worn as a personal clothing item.

The optional male Army blue service cap is a military-style peaked cap with black visor. General and field grade officers have gold oak leaf visor ornamentation. Corporals and above may wear it with the ASU. The cap is worn straight on the head with the hatband parallel to the ground.

When a specific ASU is not prescribed, Soldiers may wear Class A or any Class B variation. The shirt is tucked in with the belt buckle forming a straight "gig line." Only beret, MP, and air assault personnel may blouse trousers with black combat boots. Soldiers may optionally wear three ribbons in order of precedence instead of all authorized ribbons.

The male ASU trousers are straight-legged without cuffs, with side and hip pockets. General officers wear dark blue; all others wear light blue. Trouser leg braid: general officers have two 1/2-inch braids spaced 1/2 inch apart; other officers and corporals through CSM have one 1-1/2-inch braid; privates through specialists have no ornamentation.

The white ASU shirt is available in short and long sleeves with permanent creases, two chest pockets, and tapered shoulder loops. The short-sleeved shirt has a convertible collar; the long-sleeved has a standup collar designed to be worn with a tie.

The skirt is worn no shorter than 1 inch above or 2 inches below the back of the knee. The tropical dress variation (Class B with ribbons) serves as a hot-weather equivalent to the Class A.

Sleeve braid varies by grade: general officers wear one 1-1/2-inch gold braid, other officers wear two 1/4-inch braids on branch color, and enlisted wear a 1/8-inch soutache braid, all positioned 3 inches above the sleeve bottom.

The female blue slacks are straight-legged with slightly flared bottoms, zipper front, and two side pockets. General officers wear dark blue; all others wear light blue. Gold braid ornamentation varies by grade.

Two optional skirt styles are available: a standard skirt with a set-on waistband, back slide fastener, and back open pleat; and a double seam skirt that is slightly flared with a left-side zipper. Both are knee-length, worn between 1 inch above and 2 inches below the midpoint of the knee, with the back vent not less than 5 inches long.
