Service Stripe Calculator

The Rule

You are authorized one service stripe for each 3 years of honorable active Federal service or Reserve service creditable for retirement. Service need not be continuous.

Service Stripe Rules

  • One stripe for each 3 years of honorable service
  • Eligible service includes active Federal service as a commissioned officer, warrant officer, or enlisted member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard
  • Reserve service creditable for retirement also qualifies (per 10 USC Chapter 1223)
  • Service need not be continuous — all qualifying periods are combined
  • The 10th stripe is authorized after 29 years and 6 months of service
  • There is no maximum number of stripes, but stripes may not cover chevrons
  • Service stripes are worn on the left sleeve of the ASU and AGSU
